The turn of the
century saw Arizona Territory as the last stronghold for outlaws who drifted in
from frontiers where they were no longer tolerated. The Arizona Rangers
were established in 1901 to deal with this lawless element and though their
number never exceeded twenty-six men, they were so effective that in 1909 it was
determined that they were no longer necessary and were disbanded.
